Ken Warren is rather known to experienced poker players as talented player and writer. This is his second book. Sincerely, the first one couldn’t be called a treasure as it has some of seriously weak parts. For example, Warren makes no difference between Omaha High and Omaha High/Low. He writes about Omaha in general and that is not a great idea as these two games are pretty different and this concerns not only game play, but strategy and many other points.
As you start reading second book by Warren, first you will be invited to read about 20 differences between Omaha and Hold’em. This information may be useful for beginners who just have no or almost no experience, but even if you have played both games for at least several days and know game basics, this section won’t bring anything new.
Next part he talks about is connected with tournaments. Once again, if you are a beginner and just don’t know what to do during tournament, go ahead and read it. Much experienced users can pass this section by and go straight ahead to “tournament seat and table selection” section. It’s really well-written and gives nice outlook on the situation and overall strategy.
The weakest point of this book is simplicity. Sometimes it feels like author just wants to give us some basic rules of the game. He is more into showing us that Omaha is not Texas Hold’em than telling some useful tricks. Certainly, there are some advices and I cannot blame they are false. The reason is just they are too simple and you can get those ideas by yourself without anyone’s help. Another weak point is that this book covers more overall game without digging into details. You will read about game and its stages, but how to perform in specific situations, what to do in particular cases - you won’t read a word about it.
In general, this is not a bad book for beginners. If you are going to make your first step into amazing world of poker, you may like it. However, if you already know how to play, have learned some Omaha strategies and want a book to sharpen your skills, this one will be just a waste of time and money.
