Even though Texas Hold’em and Omaha are not very similar and have absolutely different approach to the game, when we start describing Sit N Go basic strategy, it comes out these two games are relatively close.

When you just make first steps in applying strategy in tournaments, most probably you will try to play tight while the number of players is yet huge. As time passes and other tournament members start leaving table, you already have a reputation of a tight player and this is the best time to use it doing some bluffing and stealing pots. This strategy is good for both Texas Hold’em and Omaha, but as this time we are concerned on Omaha, both Limit and Pot Limit, let’s make several corrections to polish this strategy and add some hints depending on the tournament stage. In our example we play Sit N Go with 9-10 players.

The beginning (7-8 players continue playing). You should be super careful in the beginning as this is the time when the majority of players make mistakes. It’s clear you want to win, but no one can lay the foundation of future winning from this stage. Your aim here is to play as tight as possible. Let’s say you play only a half of hands you would normally do. The reason for this is simple - many try to keep winning from the very beginning and in the result they probably will lose. You just need to stay cool and continue playing as this time your aim is to stay in the game.

Middle (approx. a half of players is left). At this stage you slowly approach to the end, but it’s not a good time to show your real play. Keep pretending a tight guy, but allow yourself playing a bit more hands. You are still the tightest player at the table.

Tournament culmination (3 players stay in). When tournament is almost over, it’s high time to show off your true face. Become a super-aggressive player, by this time you should have accumulated some money that allow you to be loose. Use your reputation to build your chip stack. As any position in tournament, even the third place, will give you money you can play freely and don’t worry about major hand. This is the right time to focus on hands containing high cards and push them as hard as you can trying to get more chips.

Omaha High-Low has gained popularity all over the world because of nature of this game. It’s a poker of draws and re-draws. At Fixed Limit Omaha High-Low actually two hands win and split the pot - the best and the lowest poker hands. Lowest hand, the one containing 5 different cards, and so very often players try to win both high and low sides and gets whole pot. Due to its popularity this game has several myths that can affect to your game, so let’s enumerate them.

1st myth – Only Ace containing hands should be played

This rule can be applied by the very beginners, as Ace can both give you an opportunity to win and highest and lowest hand. However, this approach doesn’t allow winning in some really attractive situations where value is missed. A classic example is when ace comes on the flop. Certainly, if you decide to play a hand without ace, you should take into consideration more aspects of the game like your opponents and their gaming style or your own position.

2nd myth – Opponents don’t fold

It’s not impossible to make your opponents fold their hands as many thinks. Indeed, Fixed Omaha makes this harder to get, but you still can thin your opponents. Let’s say you are sitting next to pre-flop raiser. If you make a raise of his bet, other players will have to call two bets at the same time. The idea is to take an advantage of making your opponents pay much to continue the game.

3rd myth – this game is for brainy ones

Many consider this game really complicated one because of the number of potential outs. Indeed, this game requires much attention than, for example, Texas Hold’em, but you have simple and fair main strategy. While in other games you should seat and count patiently possible out, in Fixed Limit Omaha High-Low you should focus on making a winning hand, preferably the one that can win both in high and low sides.

4th myth - Sometimes you simply have to call

If during the game pot becomes large it really makes sense to call one or two times to stay in game. Specialists say, in large, for example, 20 bet pots you should call even if your chances to win are more 5%. Omaha High-Low has a hidden danger here as it’s really not that difficult to justify bets aimed to win the high or low sides of the game. If you don’t want to make extra bets consider making a strict selection of every starting hand and draw just nut hands.

5th myth – High only hands should never be played

If high hand is not that simple to play in Fixed Limit Omaha, that doesn’t mean you should avoid playing them in all cases. As approximately in 30% of all deals there is no low hand made by the river, high hand takes whole pot. If the flop you get has only 1 low card, chances to get a winning low hand decrease drastically and so you have a real favor in case your hand is strong.

Using 4 cards in Omaha you may compose 16,432 unique combinations. Such fact and the great chances of winning with both a low and a high round, contribute to an original top list of starting hands in loose Omaha Hi-Lo different from the rest poker games. Becauce loose Omaha Hi-Lo has more types of playable hands than Hold’em, a list of the first 100 starting hands excepts too many playable 4-card combinations.

Nevertheless, here in this article we’ll try to present you and get you acquanted with the strongest starting hands in loose Omaha Hi-Lo.

Premium starting hands

1. A-A-2-x
2. A-A-3-x
3. A-2-3-x
4. A-2-4-x
5. A-2-x-x
6. A-3-4-x
7. A-A-x-x

It is very important for you to understand how all of the hands just listed differ in strength, depending on the x-card/s and if the hand is non-suited, suited or double-suited. All x-cards including a 6-9 often weaken the hand. But, in general, in loose Omaha Hi-Lo all of these combinations are strong hands. For instance, an A-2-K-K double-suited is much more stronger than an A-2-Q-8 non-suited, though both hands pertain to the A-2-x-x category. Moreover, an A-A-K-K double-suited is slightly stronger than an A-A-Q-7 non-suited and so on.

The Top Ten list

1. A-A-2-3 double-suited
2. A-A-2-4 double-suited
3. A-A-2-3 suited
4. A-A-2-5 double-suited
5. A-A-2-4 suited
6. A-A-3-4 double-suited
7. A-A-2-3 non-suited
8. A-A-2-2 double-suited
9. A-A-3-5 double-suited
10. A-A-2-6 double-suited

Odds and Statistics

When you hold a hand like A-2-3-4, than a chance that the flop will not include any low card reach 5.6% , the possibility that it will contain one low card reach 32%, the probability that it will contain two low cards reach 45.6% and a chance that the flop includes all low cards is equal 16.2%.

When you hold a high hand, then the chance of a high flop including two or three high cards reach 30%.

If you are dealt an A-2-x-x tha chance is near 6.2% of the time and an A-2-3-x is near 1% of the time.

When you hold an A-2 in a nine-handed game, then possibility that several players also hold an A-2 reach 36%.

In a nine-handed game likelihood that all of players will hold a pocket pair before the flop is about 50%.

When the cards have not paired on the flop or the turn, the probability that they will pair on the river is about 27.3% .

• You need to reckon up the pot and the number of outs that it is necessary to make your hand and then decide if it is gainful to draw.

•	It is advisable to call with a drawing round if you are sure that you’ll get paid off if you hit.

•	Determine you adversaries and observe them play their hands.

• Be ready to fold your hand on the flop frequently.

• Pllay more enterprisingly when you hit.

• Be prepared to raise in a big pot in case if the flop lets you many various draws. The best instance is if you hit a something that remind of a weak flush draw, a third-best low draw and an inside straight draw. Then it is necessary to raise in order to displace your adversaries and thereby give your hand more opportunities to win if you hit. However, be ready to reveal your hand if there is a serious action behind you.

• It is not recommended to draw for a low when the flop begins with two high cards. And vice versa, do not draw for a high when the flop begins with two low cards. You may draw just when your hand contains extra opportunities, such as a flush draw.

Three low cards on the flop

• In situation when you flop a straight draw and you have no opportunity for a low, then FOLD.

• If you flop a flush draw and you have no opportunity for a low, then FOLD.

• If you flop the nut flush draw and you have no opportunity for a low, then CALL or FOLD according to the size of the pot.

Two suited cards on the flop

•	If you dispose of the flush draw and have no low draw, then you need to go for the flush if it is the nut flush draw.

• If you have a pair on the board, you should reveal your flush and straight draws.

On the Turn

•	Play a honest game.

•	It is recommended to fold if there are three suited cards on the board and you do not dispose of the flush.

• The best moment to fold when there is a pair on the board and you do not dispose of trips or a full house.

•	Obviously fold if there is a possible straight on the board and you do not dispose of a great draw for a better round.

•	When you have the nut hand then always try a check-raise.

On the River

• You need to follow the basic norms of a play as on the turn.

•	Play actively if you are sure that your hand is the best.

•	Sometimes you can deceive if there is no chance for a low hand.

Opening hand guide for Limit Omaha Hi-Lo (full table, 8-10 players)

The best opening hands in Omaha Hi-Lo are A-A-2-3 double-suited followed by A-A-2-4 double-suited. You are lucky if you have a chance to start with this hand because it is the strongest type of hand. Having such a hand you can play for both high and low, which gives it immense scoop potential. It is understandable that being suited or (much better) double-suited affixes value to every hand.

Below you’ll find 20 good opening hands
A-A-2-x
A-A-3-x
A-A-4-5
A-2-3-x
A-2-K-K
A-2-Q-Q
A-2-J-J
A-3-4-5
A-A-x-x
A-2-K-Q
A-2-K-J
A-2-x-x (suited ace)
A-3-K-K
A-3-4-x
2-3-4-5 (fold if there is no ace on the flop)
J-Q-K-A
T-J-Q-K
K-K-Q-J
Q-J-T-9
2-3-4-x (fold if there is no ace on the flop)

Any 4 cards between a ten and an ace.

Gin hands

A hand like A-4-4-4 suited is a gin hand. This hand doesn’t offer you great opportunity and high potential but it is possible to make second-best low hand. Thought the chances of winning the low hand are merely 1% and of making a flush, just 4%.

It is often good to fold hands that hold two gaps. The odds for making a straight are not more than 1% and it is almost impossible to win the low (for example, A-4-5-9).

Remember that hands like 3-4-5-6, 4-5-6-7, 5-6-7-8 and 6-7-8-9 always have a negative expected value. You have no chance to win necessary number of times with the low hand and little chance to make the nut straight.

High pairs with two casual cards like K-K-x-x or Q-Q-x-x are not playable, but a high pair that consists of two low cards which also make your hand double-suited is playable in a lot of games. For instance K-K-2-4 double-suited is playable.

Pre-Flop Advice

• You should play about 1/3 of your hands.
• Usually it is recommended to play just hands that hands an A-2, A-3 or 2-3 for low hand.
• Commonly you should play just hands that include four cards not lower than nine and higher for high hand. An exclusion is A-9 hands with two big cards; this kind of hand is impossible to play at all.
• You should sometimes play A-4 suited and A-5 suited when the other two cards work well with the hand.
• In most cases it is better not to raise in early position with your good A-2 hands. In place raise with it in late position if there are a few callers in front of you. This kind of raise fabricates the pot when you stand to win having the best hand going in.

Raising before the flop

It is recommended not to raise in early position with your premium hands in loose Omaha Hi-Lo. You are not going to abate the field and commit much money until you have seen the flop. When you are sitting in late position and there are a couple of limpers in front of you, we advice to raise in order to build the pot.

Pocket aces

When you hold an A-A and a low card (For example, a two or three) or an ace suited, it is not wise to raise before the flop in early position. You are going to alude forcing your adversaries to fold since these kines of hands work very well in multi-way pots.

It is possible to raise with pocket aces and two high cards from an early position to confine the field, since this kind of hand plays well short-handed. An exclusion to raising may appear if the raise is hardly to confine the field. If that is the case, it is most advantageous to call. But if the flop approaches with two or three low cards, fold this hand.

Four low cards

It is very difficult to scoop the pot with this kind of hand. It is also hard to flop the nut low hand often enough in order to make this hand beneficial. In situation when you do not hold an A-2, A-3 or 2-3, alude playing this kind of hand.

Four high cards

This kind of hand better to play for a high hand but you should be ready to fold if there are two or three low cards on the flop.

High pairs

It is recommended to play this kind of hand just when you have two other good cards to go with your high pair. For instance, if your hand is double-suited and/or has low potential, like a Q-Q-2-3 double-suited.

Major advice for Limit Omaha Hi-Lo

• It is recommended to play only hands that contain A-2, A-3 or 2-3 for low hand, however of course a backup low card grants extra value.

• It is better to play just hands that have four cards (9 and higher) for high hand. For the reason to mix up your play, it is recommended usually play A-4 suited and A-5 suited if the other two cards also work quite well with the hand.

• Fold most hands that contain a 7, 8 or 9. A lot of them have a negative supposed value.

• When you hit a successive flop, play more assirtively.

• Fold your hand on the flop as often as possible.

• Play hands that are able of defeating the pot.

• It is unwise to play after the flop if you are out of the nut potential.

• Sometimes bluff on the river if there is not a low hand out.

• You should bluff rarely.

• It is better to play the more piddling starting hands in late position, when several players have called in front of you.

Common mistakes in Limit Omaha Hi-Lo

Are you a poker fan? If you are, then no doubt you’ve heard about Omaha Hold ‘em, perhaps the most popular poker variation in both real and online card rooms and casinos.

When you play Omaha Hold ‘em, also called as Omaha Eight or Better and more popularly known as Omaha Hi Lo, you must remember that in order for a hand to qualify for low, you must have no cards higher than 8. Normally good combos like a straight or a flush are ignored in making a low hand, and the lowest hand you can have consists of an A, a 2, 3, 4, and 5. Basically, you must make your best hand using two of the four cards that is dealt you, in addition to three of the five community cards. If no player comes up with a qualifying low hand, which is rare, the whole pot, like in Omaha High, goes to the player with the highest hand. Of course, you should aim to win both pots, not just half of them. This is called scooping the pot.

If you are new at Omaha Hi Lo, some terms might confuse you and, since confusion or doubt is considered negative in any game that depends both of chance and logic, you should read articles about the game in order to enlighten you and help you win. Some of the terms you will find out in this particular article are the flop, the turn, and the river, which can be considered the most important among the three.

At the start of Omaha Hi Lo, a button indicates the nominal dealer. Then, the small blind (who is the first player clockwise from the button) and the big blind (who is the first player clockwise from the small blind) are determined. After this, all the players in the game are each dealt their four hole cards.

With your four hole cards in your hands, you are now ready to make the flop. The flop is simply the first three community cards that all active players have. After the flop is dealt face-up, you and the other players will each place your bet and raise, if you want. Afterwards, the turn, which is the fourth community card, is then dealt face-up, and betting and raising takes place again. Finally, the river, which is the fifth and final community card, is dealt face-up, and betting and raising once again takes place.

Whatever the river brings can determine a player’s status in an Omaha Hi Lo game. If there is more than one player left when the last betting round is completed, the last player who makes a bet or raises must show his cards. If no bet was made in the last betting round, the first player clockwise from the button must show his cards. You should have a strong river if you want to stand a chance at the last minute. Remember that, like any other card game, Omaha Hi Lo also depends a little on luck, so you shouldn’t lose hope until the river is shown.

In Las Vegas, where poker takes center stage and finds home in the thriving casinos, Omaha Hold ‘em was first brought by casino executive Robert Turner, offering it as one of the many card games to be played at the Las Vegas Golden Nugget Casino. Omaha Hold ‘em, more popularly known as Omaha Hi Lo or Omaha Hi-Lo, is a flop game, which is basically a community card poker game, in which four cards are dealt to every player, who must then make his best hand with two of the cards and another three out of the five community cards. The rules and concept of Omaha Hold ‘em are similar to that of Texas Hold ‘em.

Compared to other variations of poker, Omaha Hi Lo, also known as Omaha Eight or Better and Omaha High Low, has become more popular in Western countries, particularly in Europe and North America, thanks to the game’s usually large pots. The pot is split into two: one for the best hand for high and another for the best hand for low. In essence, there are two pots that a player in Omaha Hi Lo can win, and it is recommended that, as a player, you go for both pots, instead of aiming to win just half of the whole pot money. To be able to do that, you must fully understand the game and its intricacies, as well as employ tried-and-tested strategies and tactics. Some of the important terms you need to comprehend well are the flop, the turn, and the river.

Since it is called Omaha Eight or Better, it is obvious that the a hand must be, at worst, an 8 in order for the low hand to win the pot for low. Once the small blind and the big blind have been determined, the players each receive their four hole cards. Betting then takes place, with one player placing a bet after the other, with the player clockwise after the big blind the first to place his bet. Then the real fun begins.

The flop, which refers collectively to the first three community cards that are available to all the active players in an Omaha Hi Lo game, is then dealt face-up on the table. Following the flop, all active players place their bets and makes their raises which are all in small sums. Then the turn takes place.

In any Omaha Hi Lo game, the turn is no less than the fourth community card, which is then dealt face-up on the table after the post-flop betting and raising. The bets naturally increase at this part of the game; from the small bet to the big bet, betting may double.

After the turn and the betting it prompts, the river, which pertains to the fifth and last community card in any Omaha Hi Lo game, is finally dealt face-up on the table. Betting again takes place, and the last player who makes a bet or raises is obliged to show his cards. One pot goes to the player with the best hand and the other pot goes to the player with the best hand for low. You can find several websites that provide tactics you can use to win both pots in an Omaha Hi Lo game.

Omaha Hi Lo, also spelled as Omaha Hi-Lo is a variation of Omaha Hold ‘em, a community card poker game or flop game that is quite similar to Texas Hold ‘em, in which every player is dealt four playing cards, with which he must bet his best hand using exactly two of them, plus precisely three of the five community cards.

In Omaha Hi Lo, also referred to as Omaha Eight-or-Better, every player in the game makes a separate five-card high and five-card ace-to-five low. To qualify for low, there must be a minimum of three cards of differing ranks eight or below on the board. These hands can be very expensive. However, you can bet that you’ll have a low hand in most of your games as, according to statistics, low hands are possible 60% of the time.

But having a lowing hand is just one part of the winning strategy – there are many others to consider. In Omaha Hi Lo, it is often easy to conclude right away that you have a winning hand when, in fact, you don’t. That’s why it’s such a challenging an exhilarating game to play, just like most other variations of poker. What’s more, large pots can be easily created by Omaha Hold ‘em poker games, making the players hold out longer in the hopes of hitting something and taking home all the money in both the pots, not just the high hand pot or the low hand pot.

As an online Omaha Hi Lo enthusiast, one exceptionally useful tip you want to know is that you have a higher chance of winning if you employ strategies after the flop. Post-flop moves, at least as far as this poker game is concerned, are more likely to produce stellar results than pre-flop combos. This means that essentially, in order to win, you have to fold a lot more than you think you should. Getting overconfident can get you broke. The goal after the flop is to scoop both ends in Omaha Hi Lo.

Once you accept this fact, the next step to employ is to fold all four-of-a-kind, three-of-a-kind, and unpaired middle cards. Since your goal is to scoop both ends, your four-of-a-kind won’t help you get there, no matter how much you think it will. Maybe it will win you one pot, but not both, so fold once you see that those cards are all you have and when your high hand is not a certain winner and appears to have to split with your low hand. Don’t even consider bluffing. Statistically, it has been proven that among all poker varieties, it is most difficult to bluff successfully in online Omaha Hi Lo.

The best starting hand possible in this game consists of AA23 that is double suited. Hands that contain basically middle ranked cards – those of little use for any low splits and tend to generate lower sets and pairs – as well as lower straights, and weaker flushes should be avoided in Omaha Eight-or-Better.

With these simple but logical post-flop tips in Omaha Hi Lo, you can improve your chances of taking home the pots.
